Red eye is caused by the light of the camera flash reflecting from the retina
of the eye, which is covered with tiny blood vessels. The more open the pupils
are, the more red eye effect you get in your photos. This is why you often
get this effect when shooting in low light conditions. Red eye is more pronounced
in people with light eye colour. It is also more pronounced in people with
blond or light-red hair and in children.
In this example I will show you how red eye is removed from your photo.
I desaturated the iris colour bringing it down to a more neutral tone. Then I added some of the natural colour back in and darkened the pupils. Lastly I made a small adjustment to the brightness and contrast.
